If you have just installed Splunk and you are staring at the search bar wondering what on earth to type, you are in exactly the right place. Splunk's Search Processing Language (SPL) looks intimidating at first, but it follows a pretty logical pattern once you understand the basics.
This guide walks you through everything you need to start writing useful Splunk searches from scratch. No jargon overload, no fluff. Let's get into it.
What is SPL?
SPL stands for Search Processing Language. It is how you tell Splunk what to look for in your data. Think of it like SQL for logs, but with a pipe-based syntax that chains commands together. Each command takes the output of the previous one and transforms it.
A basic Splunk search looks like this:
index=main sourcetype=syslog error
That is it. You are telling Splunk to find all events in the main index, from the syslog sourcetype, that contain the word "error". Simple.
Keywords and Fields
When you type words into the search bar, Splunk looks for those words anywhere in your events. So error will find every event containing the word error. Case does not matter.
Fields are more specific. When Splunk indexes data, it automatically extracts key-value pairs like host=webserver01 or status=404. You can search on these directly:
status=404
This finds all events where the status field equals 404. Combine with keywords to narrow things down:
status=404 path=/api/login
This finds 404 errors specifically on the login endpoint. Splunk treats multiple terms as AND by default.
Boolean Operators
You can use AND, OR, and NOT to build more complex searches:
status=404 OR status=500
error NOT timeout
The NOT keyword is handy for filtering out noise you do not care about. Just be careful with NOT on large datasets; it can be slow if you put it first in the search.
Wildcards
Use * as a wildcard when you are not sure of the exact value:
host=web*
This matches webserver01, webproxy, web-frontend, and anything else starting with "web". Wildcards work on field values and in raw text searches.
The Pipe Character: Where SPL Gets Powerful
The pipe | takes your search results and passes them to another command. This is where you go from "find events" to "understand your data".
index=main status=404 | stats count by host
This finds all 404 errors, then counts them grouped by host. You will instantly see which server is generating the most 404s.
Another common pattern uses timechart:
index=main error | timechart count by sourcetype
This creates a time-series chart showing how errors change over time, broken down by data source. Spot that spike at 3am? That is your starting point for the investigation.

stats - Aggregate your data any way you need:
... | stats count, avg(response_time) by host
table - Show specific fields as a clean table:
... | table _time, host, status, message
sort - Order your results by a field (the - means descending):
... | sort -count
dedup - Remove duplicate events based on a field value:
... | dedup session_id
head / tail - Limit the number of results returned:
... | head 20
where - Filter results based on an evaluated condition:
... | where response_time > 2000
eval - Create new calculated fields on the fly:
... | eval duration_sec = duration / 1000
rename - Rename fields for cleaner output:
... | rename response_time AS "Response Time (ms)"
Time Ranges: Setting the Scope of Your Search
Splunk is built around time-series data, so getting the time range right matters a lot. The time picker in the top right controls what period your search covers. Set it to "Last 60 minutes" when debugging something recent, or "Last 24 hours" for a daily overview.
You can also set the time range inside your search:
index=main earliest=-1h latest=now
Or search within a specific date range:
index=main earliest="01/01/2026:00:00:00" latest="01/02/2026:00:00:00"
The earliest and latest parameters accept relative times like -15m, -24h, -7d, or absolute timestamps.
Saving Searches and Building Alerts
Once you have a search that works, do not just close the tab. Splunk lets you save searches and turn them into scheduled reports or real-time alerts.
An alert fires when a search condition is met. For example: "send me an email if there are more than 100 failed logins in 5 minutes" or "trigger a PagerDuty notification if the error rate exceeds 5%".
This is where Splunk proves its value in a production environment. Instead of someone staring at dashboards, Splunk watches the data and tells you when something needs attention.
Your First Practice Routine
The best way to get comfortable with SPL is to actually use it. Here is a quick practice sequence:
- Run a basic keyword search against your data
- Add a field filter to narrow the results
- Pipe to
stats count by [some_field] - Visualise the output as a bar chart or timechart
- Save it as a dashboard panel
If you do not have real data yet, Splunk's tutorial dataset is a solid starting point. It is web access log data that is easy to understand even if you have never worked with logs before.
